Working With AI

Working with AI has been an interesting but fun experience, including both ease and challenges that pushed me creatively. For one of my recent projects, I wanted to create a graphic using generative AI—a simple, hand-drawn video thumbnail that could be versatile for various brands. However, the process was not as straightforward as I initially hoped, which had me changing things around.

The Creative Process

My original goal was to create a hand-drawn vibe, but early drafts with the AI function didn’t quite match the vision in my head. The designs felt too polished and lacked the imperfections of hand-drawn art. After many attempts, I decided to create something more simple: a graphic for a company treating its employees to a pre-weekend coffee.

One adjustment I made after receiving feedback was changing the background color. Initially, I leaned towards darker tones to create a moody vibe, but this reduced the contrast and made the design feel cluttered and harder to read. Switching to a lighter shade of brown brought clarity and balance to the graphic, improving the overall impact.

Strengths of Using AI

One strength of working with AI was its speed and efficiency. The generative AI allowed me to quickly think of ideas and experiment with different concepts. It was helpful in creating a foundation to build of of, especially during a creative block. AI also provided a sense of direction when I wasn’t sure where to start.

Limitations of Using AI

Despite its strengths, working with AI came with limitations. A recurring challenge for me was translating the vision in my head into the generative AI textbox to create what I wanted. The AI struggled to produce the hand-drawn aesthetic I was aiming for, and I often found myself wrestling with prompts to get closer to my ideal design. Another limitation was the difficulty in customizing certain elements, like adjusting icon colors, which became a roadblock during the design process.

Future Potential for AI

Looking ahead, I see potential for AI in my creative work. It’s a powerful tool for generating ideas, especially during times when inspiration runs out. In the future, I’d like to find ways to refine my prompts to create the outputs more aligned with my vision. As AI tools evolve, I’m curious about what advancements will look like that might allow for a greater control over design, such as color adjustments.

If I had more time for this project, I would have pushed myself to create something more dynamic, stepping outside my comfort zone to explore new design choices. AI has shown me that it’s not just a tool for finishing tasks, but it’s a gateway to experimenting with new ideas and expanding on your creativity!
